Winter Storm Juno

Winter Storm Juno Jolts Long Island

The first sign of trouble brewing on Long Island was the empty store shelves in Walmarts, Key Foods and King Kullens on Sunday. Milk, eggs and bread were left in scant supply. By this morning, gas stations exhibited lines as long as winter itself. Long Islanders everywhere were scrambling to prepare for Winter Storm Juno. (Watch our video here) #Snowmaggedon2015, as Juno is known on Twitter, is the biggest snow storm poised to hit the New York area since 2006’s 20-plus inch blizzard. If the likes of Al Roker and Sam Champion are to be believed, up to three feet of snow will pound Long Island during Winter Storm Juno. As a result, early dismissals and school closing at public schools have already begun rolling in across Long Island. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been sounding a winter weather alarm for New Yorkers as often and loud as he can. “New Yorkers should not underestimate this storm,” he said. “Assume conditions will be unsafe.” de Blasio urged New Yorkers to even try to keep walking outside to a minimum. The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warning for much of the East Coast for Monday through Tuesday night. Winter Storm Juno is expected to drop 24 to 36 inches on Long Island. High winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour are predicted as well. Our public servants from municipalities across Long Island are preparing for snow removal of epic proportions. If conditions deteriorate anywhere across the state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has the National Guard ready to help New Yorkers caught in a jam. Main thoroughfares, like the Long Island Expressway, may be closed during today’s evening commute. Public transportation may come to a halt. All of this precaution, politicians hope will prevent another disaster scenario like when motorists were stranded on the Long Island Expressway in a 2013 blizzard. Judging by the empty store shelves and gas lines, Long Islanders have learned from blizzards past enough to be ready to face whatever Winter Storm Juno might throw their way today.
